August 19th Update from DownTown Knits

NEWS:

First, I wanted to let you know that I'm going to take a vacation! We will be closed starting this Saturday Aug. 20th through Aug. 26th. My husband and I are taking off for a mini-break. We are so excited! We will be open (Jackie will be covering the shop) on Sunday Aug. 21st from 1-4:00pm and if you are scheduled for classes next Tuesday and Thursday, she will be covering those times as well. She's so wonderful to do this for us!

Many of you have asked when the next Knit-a-long is going to start. The next one will begin on September 17th (Sunday) We will be making a cardigan out of Remix from our local designer Maria Yarly. She has agreed to come in and share her pattern tips for this project! Thanks so much Maria! Also, the existing group will be doing the Belted Cardigan Vest from the new Knit Noro book using Noro Taiyo, book and yarn is available at the shop. Please let me know if you would like to participate in the knit-a-long so we can make sure all of your supplies are available for you to get started!

Now for some new products;

You have to come in and touch the new Wooly Worsted yarns by "Ewe Love Ewe". Lots of pattern support for them as well. Perfect for baby/kids! Washable too!

September Class:

Knit a Hat

Sept 4^th $ 11th

1:00 - 3:00pm- Learn to knit in the round and make a beautiful hat! You can knit a hat for any size head, great for gifts too! This is great for beginners that have not knitted in the round before!

Materials must be purchased at the shop
Beginners with cast on, bind off, knit and purl skills required.

Beginning Sock Class

September 10^th, 17^th, 24^th

10:00 - 12:00pm - Learn to knit your first pair of socks using Double pointed needles. This is a great class for learning sock techniques such as knitting in the round, ribbing, making the heal flap, turning the heal and kitchner stitch for the toe!.

When I return from vacation, the teaching staff and I will be meeting to plan more classes for the rest of the year.

Hi everyone, just wanted to let you know that we've had lots of folks asking for the Insouciant Sock Class again so we've just quickly posted another here.

Class Dates April 12th, 19th, 26th, May 10 & 17 (this is a 5 session class)

Class cost: $75.00

A few things that you will need before class.

1. Please purchase the Personal Footprints for Insouciant Sock Knitters book by Cat Bordhi prior to attending the class. I have some on order but they won't be here in time for you.

2. Sock yarn and Needles ( we are also teaching this method on Magic Loop so you'll need very long circular needles) . If you purchase yarn and needles at DownTown Knits you will receive a discount on your purchase.

This class was taught last month and it was a huge success! This is a must for the aventurest sock knitter!!!

Pre Req: must know how to knit in the round on circular needles and or DPN's.

Getting Gauge – a small word, 5 letters, 1 syllable. But it is the KEY to a successful knitting project. It determines the fit, drape and handle. Whose gauge is correct? The listed gauge or the one you got? How does the content, # of plies, structure of yarn affect the gauge? What if you use the same yarn called for in the pattern, but can’t get their gauge? What if you want to use a different yarn how can you get the gauge? We will cover all of these questions and more at Downtown Knits next Saturday, April 2 from 9 – 12. Get Gauge! (or not?)

Two classes are in the spot light this week. They're coming up and I wanted to make sure that you had time to consider then as you think about taking your knitting to the next level! You still have time to sign up. Our wonderful instructor Kim Garret will be teaching Basic Sock class, the deadline to sign up for this class is this Friday (Jan. 14^th). If you would like to sign up for any of the classes this week, you may call the shop and I will reserve your space since the weather is keeping you in doors ;-) Don’t miss out!

Basic Sock Class this Saturday (January 15^th) still has openings. There are 3 sessions 15^th, 22^nd and 29^th. Class begins at 1:00pm. You will be introduced to the basics of sock knitting and will knit a sock. You will learn basic construction methods and learn about various types of heel and toe construction.

Are you stuck on Long tail cast on? Come to Downtown Knits and sign up for our session on January 22, from 9 - 12 to learn 9 different ways to cast on for useful purposes or for decorative edges. In this 3 hour class you will learn the following ways to cast on: EZ, Knit On, Cable, Long Tail, Norwegian, Twisted German, Tubular, Channel Island, and Provisional. We will discuss which method is best for which application. Bring a ball of light colored worsted weight yarn and size 7 – 8 needles.

Knitting 102 -Learn the basics of increasing and decreasing.
Detailed description: Enhance your knitting skills as you learn the basic increases and decreases used while knitting. This class is the second in the Knitting Basics Series.

Knitting 201 - Brief Description: An introduction to knitting cables and lace.
Detailed description: Learn how to make both beautiful textured cables and delicate lace. The first session is dedicated to learning how to knit cables and the second session is dedicated to knitting lace.

Entrelac - Brief Description: An introduction to entrelac knitting.
Detailed description: Entrelac knitting creates a fabric with a wonderful quilted or woven appearance. Although it looks complex, the knitting is simple and lots of fun to do. In this class, you will learn all the steps used to create this fascinating technique.

This Shrug was made with one skein of Berroco sock yarn. It can be made with any sock yarn as well! It's too cute and great for the summer or fall. The Pattern is available at my shop. It ranges from child sizes 2-10.

I've been busy with new arrivals at the shop. along with classes and teaching one particular student that means a lot to me (any guesses who this might be)? What a great turnout we had Saturday for the Demo Day with Nancy Shroyer of Nancy's Knit Knacks! Thanks to Nancy for giving us some history of her company and products. I myself learned about a few products that she carries that I didn't know much about.

Marsha Cunningham's grandchildren Josef and Mollee Cunningham, 7-year-old twins with autism, are the inspiration for the upcoming 2011 Knitting Naked for Autism Calendar, featuring eight Pierce County knitters and one from New York State, tastefully draped in knit goods. Most of the proceeds will go to getting the twins the treatments that have shown promise. Cunningham is also making the calendar available to other autism groups that want to use it as a fundraiser.

Traditional Fair Isle knitting techniques will be covered while knitting a headband. Carrying both colors in one hand or one in each hand will be covered as well as the history of Fair Isle Knitting and other types of 2 color stranded work. Corrugated ribbing and cutting steeks will be discussed. Must have the ability to knit and purl.

Spindle Spinning for Beginners
Learn to use a drop spindle and spin your own yarn!

Learn to use a drop spindle in a easy stress free way. Learn about the difference between worsted vs. woolen spinning, learn to Adean ply and then finish the yarn. Determine the "weight" of the yarn. We will also discuss what to look for in buying a spindle.

Drafting a Sweater Pattern (in any size with any yarn)
Learn to draft your own sweater pattern.

Oct. 16th & 23rd

Learn to take your own measurements then draft a pattern for a pullover using any yarn that will result in a personal fit. How to determine the total amount of yarn/fiber needed will also be covered.

Professional results begin with good planning before starting a project. This will be discussed as well as different types of binding off, seams, buttonholes, zippers and edgings. Blocking for texture, fiber content, and shape will be covered.

Hi everyone I wanted to give you some updates on new happenings here at DownTown Knits. Hopefully I caught your attention by the title of this post.... Yes-sir-re... Zealana's beautiful Kiwi yarns are here... 40% New Zealand Merino wool, 30% Possum and 30% organic Cotton. It's just beautiful and the earthy colors are wonderful! Perfect for these summer months and warm enough for cool fall evenings... come and see... you'll fall in love with it for sure.

Announcements:
1. I want to announce that starting this Friday night we will have "Knit DownTown Nights". This means, everyone is welcome to come and sit and knit... bring your projects, show us what's on your needles and ask for advice from the group of experts that I know you all are... bring your friends...we have lots of room for you! You are welcome to bring snacks and drink but please keep it non-alcoholic .... I checked with the town and we just can't have it... sorry for those who asked ;-).

2. For those of you that have asked about me carrying Rowan...well here is the bad news. ......... I can't. I have been told by the company that I am too close to another shop that carries it. ;-(. I guess as the new guy on the block I just don't have a voice...but I will it's just a matter of time... But do not fear, I have a plan and I think you will just love the alternative... shhhssh will let you know soon what this is... not ready to let the cat our of the bag just yet ;-).

Saturday was amazing and I hope that everyone enjoyed themselves. I want to thank everyone that attend DownTown Knits Grand Opening. Additionally, I want to give a special "thanks" to Tina Hilton the BeSweet rep for her help with a wonderful and beautiful BeSweet Trunk Show... "Thanks Tina" !!!!   I still have all the peices showing for those that might want to stop and see what we showed on Saturday. The items will be here through Friday so come and see!

Here are a few updates: Note that I have posted my FINAL hours. Look the the left side and you will see the updates. I hope this works out for everyone. Testing the hours over the past 2 weeks really helped me determine what works for everyone.

NOTE: As I told most of you, My son Alex is graduating from HS this weekend. So there will be a few changes to my hours. Here they are: Closed Friday night starting at 5:00. Closed Sunday and Monday... I will be open on Saturday. This is for this week only... big party planned for the last one to leave the nest ;-(...well he's not going that far ;-).

Yarn Update!

Just a quick update to let you know of some of the yarns that have arrive this week since you last stopped by. Malabrigo worsted and their new Rasta has arrived and it's just beautiful. I think I mentioned that Mission Falls 1824 cotton is her along with the beautiful Banana fiber and lace weight hemp is here from Blonde Chicken (a must see)!. Also some beautiful selections from Aslan Trends such as their beautiful Sock yarn along with a the luscious 100% Merino called Del Sur... it's yummy!! Many of you have asked about the different brands that I carry so here is the list:
Malabrigo, Berroco (broad line), Aslan Trends, The Unique Sheep, Mission Falls, BeSweet, Lana Grosa, Brown Sheep lambs pride, Nature Spun. Universal's Poems Sock & Worsted, Flax, Fibra Natura Bamboo.

First Week !!

Hi everyone, wanted to thank you all for a wonderful first week! It's been wonderful meeting everyone!!

Wanted to give you all some updates so here we go!

On May 22nd (Saturday) I will have the Grand Opening of DownTown Knits from 1:00 - 4:00pm. I will have some sweets, punch and door prizes. Also, don't forget we will be having the Be Sweet Trunk Show as well during this time... I can't wait for all of you to see all of their beautiful products...turely amazing!!! So please stop by and enjoy your self. I know alot of you will be attending the Carolina Fiber Fest so stop by when you are done!.

Most everyone that has come by the shop this past week has asked if I will be hosting classes...the answer is YES. I will be posting the class schedule here on my blog starting in JUNE so look for updates here.
Last but not least I wanted to tell you about something special we are doing at DTK's starting this week. Judy Tysmans teaches crochet to the Helen Wright Womens Shelter in Raleigh which is sponsored by the Urban Ministries of Wake County (http://www.urbanmin.org/) . These women have nothing and are so thankful to those who donate items to help with this effort. I will be setting up a jar in the shop for you donate any of your "not in use" crochet hooks. Also, if you would like to buy crochet hooks from me and donate them as well, there is a Tax duction form available. Just ask me when you come in and I'll give you the information. Lets all get together and help out these women and this wonderful effort.

Well the time is here! I want to take a moment to thank everyone that have helped this dream come true for me... so here is the list: My Husband Chuck who spent the entire week side-by-side with me working 10 hour days... To my entire family for their time and support and last by not least to my friends all of which this would have not been possible. Thanks to Nancy, Mel, Jessica, Cathty, Kate, Elaina. Also, I want to thank all my wonderful suppliers that have come though for me...

Please take notice that I have changed my opening date to Tuesday, May 11th. I need just one more day to get a few technology issues worked out along with a few last minute shipments to arrive. I know all of you have been sooooooo patient with me and I can't wait to meet all of you in the coming weeks.

This week I'll be working on arranging my class schedules so look here for updates and class postings.

Totally Exciting

Hi everyone, well still moving in the right direction. Got all my State and Federal stuff done. Have my name officially incorporated and going to sign a lease on Monday. Yesterday was exciting, I met with my first Yarn Distributor. A very long meeting but truly a wonderful experience. I sure hope that everyone likes what I've picked out ;-) Got many more meetings with suppliers lined up.

Lets all keep our fingers crossed. I'm hoping to be ready to open the first of May, so I've got lots to do before that happens. Will try to keep everyone up to date on happenings.

Any suggestions are welcome!

Moving Right Along

Well things are moving along quite well. I met with my CPA this week and got all the details of what I need to do with incorp, taxes, blah blah blah... Also secured my financing. So the only thing now is to FIND A location in Down Town Apex. So if you all can keep your eyes and ears open for me that would be wonderful! As soon as I secure a place I'm ready to "rock n roll" !

Here is where I can use some of your help. How about sending me some ideas on the types of yarns you'd like me to carry. I have a long list and I'd like to pair it down a bit for starters. All recommendations will be considered and welcome. So look forward to seeing all of you soon... keep your comments and ideas coming!
And for goodness sakes, please let the weather warm up a bit...I'm done with this snow!!!

A New Adventure

Well hello everyone and welcome the my very first post on my blog. I'm not sure I know what I'm doing so here we go! Wanted to let everyone know that I'm working "hard I might add" on opening a knit shop in the down town Apex area. There are so many hurdles to jump I won't bore you with them all. One of the most frustrating things is finding the right spot. I have a few sites that I'm looking at, but nothing final yet. Believe me, if I get this resolved within the next month I'll be jumping for JOY !!

The other piece that I'm working on is the business plan... YUCK! You can not believe all the information that is needed... but I will say, it really has made me think of things that I wouldn't have thought about.

The exciting part is deciding on what I will sell... So here is my plan (suggestions are welcome).

Yarn (plan to offer locally produced)

Needles

Notions (including buttons that are locally made)

Books

Patterns

...and yes I will offer classes - something that I've been doing out of my house for the past 6 months.

Classes will include:

Beginner

Beginner-Experienced

Sweater Construction

Private lessons

I will also have space for you to come and "gather". Knitting is a social event and we all know there aren't a lot of places to go and just sit and knit with other knitters.

Well, that's enough for today. Have to get back working on my business plan... boring !!!
